Four 101st Airborne soldiers killed in Iraq

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. Four soldiers with the 101st Airborne Division were killed and one was injured when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee, the Army said Monday.

Staff Sgt. Rickey Scott, Sgt. Dennis J. Flanagan, Sgt. Clifton J. Yazzie and Spc. Matthew C. Frantz were killed in the attack Friday while patrolling near Hawijah, the Army said. The wounded soldier was not identified.

All were members of the 1st Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Campbell.

The deaths were the most in a single incident involving Fort Campbell soldiers since four were killed in November by a roadside bomb.

Scott, 33, of Columbus, Ga., was an infantryman assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment. He joined the Army in November 1996 and arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2004.

  Dear Frantz family,

The days coming as the days past will be hard but not impossible. The road we travel on is crowded with other gold star families.

Tomorrow marks 3 years since we heard the news of our son's death with Matthew, Rickey and Clifton. None of these men will be forgotten by us. We are grateful for Matthew's service to our country. We extend our sympathy and prayers to you.

It's been 20 years since your passing... However, I never forgotten the day you told me I am married, I am going to have a baby, and day your son was born... You touched some many lives in different ways in your brief time on this earth in ways others can't imagine... Some people can be given a life time on this earth and accomplish nothing, and there are some people who are given a short time and accomplish so much... You Mr. Flores-Mejia aka Ricky was that person and soldier who accomplish so much in your shoft tme... As I see the days pass by, and the war seems to be a distant memory, your memory is still alive in my life, and still on this and like other days with my grandchildren I sit back like we did many times and listen to those West Coast oldies... James David Parker

I knew James David Parker as "Dave" when he lived in Solon Ohio. We met when I moved into town from out of state. He and his group of friends were a year or two older than me. Dave was a bright beacon of hope and joy to me. I was an unsure young man in a strange place. Dave introduced me to many people and ensured his friends always saved me a seat in the lunchroom. I have fond memories of him and his friends during that time. I doubt so many people would have been as wonderful toward me without Dave's incredible kindness. I've never forgotten his kindness. I hope to be able to pay it forward someday.
