JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Marine from Jacksonville has been killed in Iraq.
Pfc. Nathan Clemons, 20, was killed Tuesday by a roadside bomb near Rutbah in Iraq’s Anbar province, according to U.S. Central Command.
He was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Clemons was a graduate of Terry Parker High School. His parents now live in Tennessee.
“He saw the military as a way to mature and grow up and get some responsibility,†said Mike Jackson, pastor of Clemons’ church in Jacksonville.
Jackson said Clemons’ called his parents early Tuesday and said he was going to “be all right,†even if something happened to him.
“He meant all right spiritually, in his soul,†Jackson said. “It’s giving them great comfort now to know that spiritually, he was where he needed to be.â€
