FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A Tennessee soldier who went to high school in Illinois has died during combat operations in Iraq, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.
Master Sgt. Michael L. McNulty, 36, of Knoxville, Tenn., was killed Friday by small-arms fire when his unit was attacked in Qaim, Iraq.
He was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters at Fort Bragg.
McNulty enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school in Elgin, Ill., in 1986. After a brief separation of service he re-enlisted in 1994 and served with the 327th Infantry Regiment at Fort Campbell, Ky., and later in Hawaii as a rifle squad leader, instructor and reconnaissance squad leader.
