Incident: Lance Cpl. Steven M. Chavez died March 14 from a nonhostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq. Chavezs death is currently under investigation.

New Mexico Marine killed in Iraq

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A southern New Mexico family is mourning the death of a 20-year-old Marine who was killed this week while serving in Iraq.

The family of Lance Cpl. Steven Chavez, who grew up in the Hondo Valley, said March 15 they had learned from military officials that the Marine died the day before in Anbar province, a Sunni insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad.

The U.S. Department of Defense has not confirmed Chavezs death, and details of how he died remain unclear.

Eddie Chavez, the Marines father, told the Albuquerque Journal, that he had talked to his son about 15 hours before learning of his death. He said the younger Chavez had just another week in the field and he was coming...

Please know that Steven is a Hero and he is greatly missed!! He did not die in vain, yet he died doing a job he so dearly loved and believed in! You touched some many lives in different ways in your brief time on this earth in ways others can't imagine... Some people can be given a life time on this earth and accomplish nothing, and there are some people who are given a short time and accomplish so much... You Mr. Flores-Mejia aka Ricky was that person and soldier who accomplish so much in your shoft tme... hello my name is Jesus Vega I would like to give my condolences to Christopher's family and friends, I served with him in Iraq and slept in the same quarters. I have many fond memories of him. I have never forgotten his sacrifice. I would like to share that the greatest memory I had of Chris is that he would speak highly of his mom and how much she meant to him.
