FLOMATON, Ala. — Hundreds of mourners attended a funeral for a 23-year-old Marine killed in the Iraq war.
Camp Lejeune-based Cpl. Christopher David Winchester died July 14 in a roadside bomb explosion near Tikrit, the Defense Department said. He was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division.
Services were held Thursday at Flomaton High School. Winchester graduated from the school in 2000.
The Rev. Doug Greer, pastor of the Pentecostal Divine Temple Church in East Brewton, spoke about Winchester’s participation in his church.
“Just before he went off,” Greer said, his voice choked with emotion, “he came up and asked the congregation to pray for him. Then he left with that smile he had.”
Marine Lance Cpl. Corey McIntosh said he had served with Winchester since boot camp.
