COOKEVILLE, Tenn. A former Monterey resident was killed during a second tour to Afghanistan after he stepped on a mine, according to his family.
The family of Sgt. Alex Van Aalten, 21, with the Armys 82nd Airborne Division, was notified April 20 of the incident in the Kandahar region of Afghanistan, where he was stationed.
Van Aaltens mother Susan said the family learned of what happened while they were at work.
She said her son had been in Afghanistan since January and was scheduled to be there for 15 months. He wasnt able to give many details about what he was doing, but she said she believes he was involved in a large ongoing offensive...

I remember when he called me Heba because he couldn't pronounce Heather and Shaka zu-zu instead of Shaka zu-lu. I never knew him as an adult but know the loss that everyone suffers. In his picture, I can still see the little boy I used to know so long ago. I'm glad to know he grew into such a honorable adult. Heather

I knew Alex. He was one of my husbands best friends. Words can not express what this man meant to so many people. He was the kindest, sweetest person you would ever meet. Shana.. SGT Van Aalten was in my husbands platoon in Iraq, I knew his wife and him. I want to say to Shana and his family that I am so sorry for your loss. I also want to say I am sorry for the for my husband and the guys still over there because they lost a good friend and a good soldier. God Bless Alex.
