FORT BRAGG, N.C.-- A Green Beret with Oklahoma ties has died after he was attacked in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said.

Sgt. Jason T. Palmerton, 25, of Auburn, Neb., died Saturday in Qal�eh-Yegaz, Afghanistan. He was based at Fort Bragg.

He came under enemy fire during a foot patrol, the military said Tuesday, but no other details were released. The military described him as a communications sergeant.

Palmerton was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, and had been in Afghanistan just six weeks. He enlisted on July 31, 2002.

Palmerton was born in Hamburg, Iowa, and grew up in Nebraska. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1998.

He is the 23rd U.S. service member with connections to Nebraska to have died in Afghanistan and Iraq since the beginning of military operations, according to the Department of Defense...

	I'll never forget Jason's smile. We met on a detail in the army, and we became instant friends. In the following months we grew closer, and he was always there to make me laugh, even when no one else could. His family are in my prayers...I'll never understand why someone with as much life as Jason had his cut so short.

You touched some many lives in different ways in your brief time on this earth in ways others can't imagine... hello my name is Jesus Vega I would like to give my condolences to Christopher's family and friends, I served with him in Iraq and slept in the same quarters. I have many fond memories of him. I knew James David Parker as "Dave" when he lived in Solon Ohio. We met when I moved into town from out of state. He and his group of friends were a year or two older than me. Dave was a bright beacon of hope and joy to me. I was an unsure young man in a strange place. Dave introduced me to many people and ensured his friends always saved me a seat in the lunchroom. I have fond memories of him and his friends during that time. I doubt so many people would have been as wonderful toward me without Dave's incredible kindness. I've never forgotten his kindness.
