I often think of Brett and the students I had in my brief year at EC. I had Brett in a lunch period Government class that was extended 15 minutes beyond what the other classes got, so we often took time to chat during the extra time. Brett was a funny young man and a bright guy. I remember many times his doing impressions of Coach Vanscoy and other coaches during free time. It brings a tear to my eye that many others in the world did not have the opportunity to meet such a great kid (pardon me for calling him that, but all you guys at EC were like my kids, especially the football team). Once you have spent many many hours in the heat of summer and then all those Friday nights together you bond with everyone. I cherish all the time I spent with the 01 team, you guys were very special and did not realize how gifted youi all were...greatness was in you all and some had yet to realize that. I believe Brett did. He lived doing what he enjoyed and I hope with no regrets. I shed tears for him not because of what he lost, but because of the selfishness of what I, rather the world, lost, a great person. To the rest of EC classes of 02-04, I hope you all are doing well 10 years after I had the truly great pleasure of having you in class. May God bless you all, even Wisecup.Coach BricklesMiamisburg, Ohio

I've known Brett since i was 4 years old. He was my first friend outside of my family, and I considered him my best friend for most of my life. We went to school together and babysitted Brett for about 10 years. he was part of my family. Brett was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone. We grew up together, he was always there for me, and i was for him. Now its hard to think he is not. When we graduated we grew apart in a way, but i always loved him just the same. I never got a chance personally to tell Brett how much i thought of his service in the military. I respect and honor him more than any one i know. I love his family and my prayers are with Pam and Keiths familys. We will never forget Brett and what he done for us.
With love and respect Daniel Denney

Driving from Alabama to Ohio to visit my parents for a few days, I was impressed and inspired by the public expressions of love, respect, and appreciation for Brett and his service to this nation.
I, too, lost an only child recently. As an Army reservist, I was activated and deployed in time for the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. When four-year-old Mamie was diagnosed with cancer (Wilms’ tumor) I came home on emergency leave and was subsequently discharged. She died this year. Today I included the following in Mamie’s CaringBridge website:
“If you’ve recently traveled Ohio State Route 22 where it coincides with Route 3, you know very well that local hero Brett Wightman has fallen in Iraq. It is not quite as obvious to the traveler which of the nearby communities is his hometown, unless the density of American flags is greatest at Sabina. (You can learn more about him at (More Info) ) Not surprisingly, media coverage has been focused on the lady camped out in Texas demanding another private interview with the President. If you wonder where the protesters rallying around her came from, they may have migrated from southwestern Ohio – I saw no evidence of any still lurking there.”
If you’d like to see the context of the entry, you can go to (More Info) .

It's hard to hear that one of your friends die. When I heard I got very angry at first because he promised me he wouldn't get hurt. Then I realized he couldn't really hold a promise like that. It is hard to believe that the boy I ran to whenever I needed someone to talk to you or the boy who was there when my heart got broken for the first time isn't here with me anymore. Well, I thought that at first. Then I got my pictures out and I got to thinking of all the good times we had together and I can still feel his presence around me at all times. He will always be there in my heart and in my mind. He was a very special boy. Well, I guess he wasn't a boy anymore. He was a very special man. I always knew he would make it out of here. He had so much potential. He loved what he done. When he would come back for visits, he was happy to be home, but he would talk about not being able to wait to leave again. He had such a good heart. I swear, it was made out of gold. His smile is what had me in his grasp. It was so beautiful. And his laugh just so adorable. He was so sweet and kind. He would do anything for anybody. He would give someone his shirt off of his back if they needed. But, he had his faults. I'm not going to make him seem like the perfect saint even though he was close to it sometimes. I do love him and I do miss him very much. I know his family and friends do to. I can't wait to see him someday again. I hope he will be waiting for me behind those pearly gates.

I am a fellow East Clintoner friend of Brett's. He was only a year ahead of me in school. He was such a great guy. Funny, smart, athelticaly talented. I always remember him saying things he was going to do, and always kept his word. Like one of my friends that was on track team him once recalled that he said, "I'm going to win today." And he did it. He never had anything bad to say about anyone, and vice versa. Such an all around good guy and a friend to everyone. He'd do anything for anyone if it meant helping them out and bettering their lives. He could be anything in the world he wanted to be. I knew that he could acheive his goals that he set to. And he aspired to be a Marine, which he did become. It was such a shock when I got wind of the news that he had been killed in Iraq. Harsh reality set in, and I broke down. We weren't best friends, but i knew him and he knew me. We talked in the classes that we had, and once even playing basketball at an open gym at the highschool. Brett, you will be so deeply missed by me, your family, your friends, and the this tight knit town of Sabina. My thought and prayers are with your family and other friends. I hope to see you again one day.
A friend always, Jessica Butler (Formerly Sullivan in school)
