Incident: Army Staff Sgt. Eric D. Cottrell died Aug. 13 in Qayyarah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Also killed were Pfc. Juan M. Lopez Jr. and Pfc. Paulomarko U. Pacificador.

Alabama man killed in IED attack

FORT BLISS, Texas � Three Fort Bliss soldiers, including an Alabama man, died this week in Iraq after their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device, the Department of Defense said Thursday.

Killed were Staff Sgt. Eric D. Cottrell, 39, of Pittsview, Ala.; Pfc. Juan M. Lopez Jr., 23, of San Antonio; and Pfc. Paulomarko U. Pacificador, 24, of Shirley, N.Y.

The men died Monday in Qayyarah, according to a release from the DoD. They were assigned to the 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Bliss.

Cottrell, who joined the Army in October 2004, was a health care specialist. He is survived by his wife...

	that thing that says he was a health care specialist needs to be changed....he was a damned proud combat medic. i know what the job title is...but he didnt work in no hospital...he worked on the line with the rest of us.

	In the late 1980's our son, Bruce, brought Eric home for Christmas when they were stationed in Ft. Devens, MA. We had a wonderful time that year. What a joy and blessing to have known Eric. It's been 20 years since your passing... However, I never forgotten the day you told me I am married, I am going to have a baby, and day your son was born... You touched some many lives in different ways in your brief time on this earth in ways others can't imagine... Some people can be given a life time on this earth and accomplish nothing, and there are some people who are given a short time and accomplish so much... You Mr. Flores-Mejia aka Ricky was that person and soldier who accomplish so much in your shoft tme... As I see the days pass by, and the war seems to be a distant memory, your memory is still alive in my life, and still on this and like other days with my grandchildren I sit back like we did many times and listen to those West Coast oldies... James David Parker

I knew James David Parker as "Dave" when he lived in Solon Ohio. We met when I moved into town from out of state. He and his group of friends were a year or two older than me. Dave was a bright beacon of hope and joy to me. I was an unsure young man in a strange place. Dave introduced me to many people and ensured his friends always saved me a seat in the lunchroom. I have fond memories of him and his friends during that time. I doubt so many people would have been as wonderful toward me without Dave's incredible kindness. I've never forgotten his kindness. I hope to be able to pay it forward someday.
