Assigned to the 55th Brigade, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Scranton, Pa.

Incident: Army Master Sgt. Scott R. Ball died Aug. 27 at Forward Operating Base Naray, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit during combat operations in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Also killed were Maj. Henry S. Ofeciar and Sgt. Jan M. Argonish.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Two Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers embedded with the Afghan military were among five people killed in an ambush by suspected Taliban militants Aug. 27.

The ambush in Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan killed Master Sgt. Scott R. Ball, 38, of Carlisle, and Sgt. Jan M. Argonish, 26, of Scranton, along with an active-duty Army officer whose name has not been released and two Afghan soldiers, the Guard said Aug. 28.

In civilian life, Ball was a state police trooper and Argonish a prison guard.

They are the first Pennsylvania Guard soldiers to be killed in combat in Afghanistan. Twenty-seven soldiers from the state Guard have been killed in Iraq.

Dear Scott,

Thankyou for being with Jan, for sacrificing and fighting as you did. Your State Police Brothers were a sea of guardian angels when Jan was brought home. It was a site to see, and be a part of.

I know you left behind a family and I'm truly sorry. My Daughter was going to marry Jan when he returned. Please watch over us, protect us, and guide us. We could all use the help. Till we meet again.

James David Parker

I knew James David Parker as "Dave" when he lived in Solon Ohio. We met when I moved into town from out of state. He and his group of friends were a year or two older than me. Dave was a bright beacon of hope and joy to me. I was an unsure young man in a strange place. Dave introduced me to many people and ensured his friends always saved me a seat in the lunchroom. I have fond memories of him and his friends during that time. I doubt so many people would have been as wonderful toward me without Dave's incredible kindness. I've never forgotten his kindness. I hope to be able to pay it forward someday.
