Incident: Army Sgt. 1st Class Rocky H. Herrera died Aug. 28 in Jaji, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device. Also killed were Sgt. Cory L. Clark and Sgt. Bryce D. Howard.

SALT LAKE CITY — A 43-year-old Utah native assigned to Fort Lewis in Washington state died from a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, his family said.

Army Sgt. Rocky Herrera was expected home early in 2008. He was killed Aug. 27 while trying to shield other soldiers, family members said.

“Rocky believed in what he was doing,” his mother, Elaine Herrera, said Aug. 29. “And he had to protect his troops because it was his job.”

Herrera boxed until he was 25 and was known in the ring as the “Rock.” He graduated from West High School and joined the military in his 20s. He left Salt Lake City about 10 years ago and was living in Lacey, Wash.

  Rocky,

It's been a year since you left us and it feels like an eterninty. Our lives are so different now without you. Thank you for being the best brother that you could be. I miss your phone calls and hearing about your projects. I also miss your prank calls too. Dominos has stopped calling me for money. :-)

We all miss you more that you can ever imagine. Our hearts are healing but it still hurts that you are not around. Keep visiting us in our dreams. It makes feel normal when we wake up. Even if it only last for a day.

Oh by the way, I know its you and Dad moving mine and AO's keys and hiding stuff from us. Well done!

It's been 20 years since your passing... However, I never forgotten the day you told me I am married, I am going to have a baby, and day your son was born... You touched some many lives in different ways in your brief time on this earth in ways others can't imagine... Some people can be given a life time on this earth and accomplish nothing, and there are some people who are given a short time and accomplish so much... You Mr. Flores-Mejia aka Ricky was that person and soldier who accomplish so much in your shoft tme... As I see the days pass by, and the war seems to be a distant memory, your memory is still alive in my life, and still on this and like other days with my grandchildren I sit back like we did many times and listen to those West Coast oldies... "Never Forgotten"

hello my name is Jesus Vega I would like to give my condolences to Christopher's family and friends, I served with him in Iraq and slept in the same quarters. I have many fond memories of him. James David Parker

I knew James David Parker as "Dave" when he lived in Solon Ohio. We met when I moved into town from out of state. He and his group of friends were a year or two older than me. Dave was a bright beacon of hope and joy to me. I was an unsure young man in a strange place. Dave introduced me to many people and ensured his friends always saved me a seat in the lunchroom. I have fond memories of him and his friends during that time. I doubt so many people would have been as wonderful toward me without Dave's incredible kindness. I've never forgotten his kindness. I hope to be able to pay it forward someday.
