Northeast Ohio soldier killed in Iraq

RAVENNA, Ohio — A soldier from northeast Ohio was killed in Iraq when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire, the Department of Defense said Oct. 9.
Cpl. Benjamin Dillon, 22, died Oct. 7 in northern Iraq, according to a military news release.
Dillon, who enlisted in the Army during his senior year at Southeast High School in Ravenna, had been assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.
He had been home in nearby Edinburg Township about three weeks ago, spending the break with family, chatting around campfires and racing four-wheelers through woods. He rarely spoke about his duties in the Middle East, said sister-in-law Julia Dillon.
“I don’t think he wanted to worry anyone,” she said.
Dillon played baseball, basketball and golf in high school. He graduated in 2004.
“Bad things aren’t supposed to happen to such good people,” said Bob Dunn, Dillon’s high school basketball coach.
Ravenna is about 30 miles southeast of Cleveland. |

| Prayers & Condolences For: Benjamin C. Dillon BY Anonymous on Dec 14, 2007 | | | You are so missed. Mostly I miss the little boy who I assumed would outlive me. Every memory I have of Ben brings a smile to my face. He certainly was special and we all knew it from the beginning. I remember him as a toddler hugging his Mom so tightly around her neck while his Uncles teased him about something. And I remember him a wee bit older than that trapsing through the woods and trying to keep up with the older cousins. He had a walking stick that was bigger than he was. But that stick came in handy for him as he swatted the brush away from his face and hoisted himself up a hill. He was adorable and ADORED. He was the youngest for many years and as any parent knows....the youngest has a very special place in a family. He was their youngest but not a bit spoiled. Ben grew and developed characteristics we recognized while he was growing up. His self imposed and quiet discipline kept him on level ground as he kept up with every adventure, misadventure, or daring endeavor his brothers or cousins would get into. And who would have thought that he would challenge himself to go beyond what anyone could have guessed. He became a Ranger! The Pride we feel for him will last our lifetime and the memories are sweet visits from him.
