Student remembers Pa. National Guard soldier as a mentor

Associated Press

When Broc Repard was playing junior high basketball, Ryan S. Ostrom was his coach. But he was so much more.

“He taught people skills as much as he taught basketball,” said Repard.

“He was a good leader and a good person to look up to. And he had that special smile we used to see in the locker room.”

Ostrom, 25, of Liberty, Pa., died Aug. 9 from small-arms fire in Habbaniya. He was assigned to Williamsport.

“He was a soldier you could give a task to and know it would get done. You could just look at him and know he was a leader,” said Staff Sgt. Craig Stevens.

Ostrom captained his high school’s soccer and basketball teams and won a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association sportsmanship award. He was a Youth Leader of Tomorrow candidate.

  Ryan,

We are going to miss you so much. No one knew this was going to happen. All I want you to know is it is a very difficult time for us to try to understand why. I know we will never understand why.

You will always be in our hearts and soul, and we will meet you someday at that golden gate and we want you to be there waiting for us with that great big hug and smile you always gave to us. Also as you used to say Bryce I will have to teach you how to throw a ball... because your dad throws like a girl... You will someday be able to do that... So for now we have to tell you good bye and you are going to be missed badly by us.

We love you very much our friend

Love Andy, Dawn, Beau & Bryce

I served with Ryan for the past three years, as well as a deployment with him to Bosnia. I was honoreed to be chosen to be one of the pallbearers at the funeral. He was one of the few guys I could feel I could really count on from our unit. I miss him so much, and I am glad I got to know. Every day when I pray I thank God for Ryan Ostrom.

I had the honor of knowing Ryan when he was younger, and played all stars with my son. I also know some of Ryans family. Ryan went from a star then, to an all American Hero. Now hes one of Gods chosen angels. May his family and love ones find peace in knowing that Ryan is still with them everyday, it's just in a different way now. Hes the angel that walks beside you all day long, every second of every day. God Bless you Ryan, God Bless Ryans family. And God Bless America.

I had the privilege of attending SSGT Ryan S. Ostrom's funeral in Liberty, PA on 19 Aug 05. The outpouring of support from his community and our families was heart wrenching. He believed in why he was over there, and he put his love of country before everything.

May those who knew and loved him be comforted and may God bless and sustain them.

Jose Ricardo Flores-Mejia

It's been 20 years since your passing... However, I never forgotten the day you told me I am married, I am going to have a baby, and day your son was born... You touched some many lives in different ways in your brief time on this earth in ways others can't imagine... Some people can be given a life time on this earth and accomplish nothing, and there are some people who are given a short time and accomplish so much... You Mr. Flores-Mejia aka Ricky was that person and soldier who accomplish so much in your shoft tme... As I see the days pass by, and the war seems to be a distant memory, your memory is still alive in my life, and still on this and like other days with my grandchildren I sit back like we did many times and listen to those West Coast oldies... "Never Forgotten"

Frank E. Adamski III

To the family of Frank Adamski, including his wife and daughter, my sincere condolences. I plan to make sure he is never forgotten.

Laurie Cobb

She was my 3rd and 5th grade teacher. Today I'm 32 and still think about her. She was the best teacher ever. From her hair children stories to her bubbly happiness and kindness she spread. I'll never forget her. She was the teacher who had lunch with the kids in her classroom so everyone had someone to be with. She made my school experience amazing. I will never forget her.. I love you Mrs. Cobb. Sincerely, Forever in my thoughts, Alyssa (Viau) Capone

Larry E Polley Jr

SPC Polley died almost two decades ago so I don't know if this message will be seen. In honor of Memorial Day, my agency hands out cards with names of those who have fallen. This year, 2023, I received the card for SPC Polley and was inspired to look up more on him. I am thankful for his service and sacrifice. My condolences to his family. He is not forgotten.

Paul C. Holter III

Alex D Gonzalez

Love you and miss you always. Since you been gone it has been hard for everyone. I know you loved what you did, and I want to thank you for our freedom. If I can have you back home and safe living your life man everything would be different. No matter how much money they would offer me I would rather have you alive and home. Money comes and go so it's not worth losing you.

Chris was a strong minded person and looked out for other. He was kind and friendly the he made friends with everyone. Chris was truly a great man! I sincerely apologize for not sharing sooner. but would like to express that Chris's memory will never be forgotten! though he is not with us he will always be in spirit! James David Parker

I knew James David Parker as "Dave" when he lived in Solon Ohio. We met when I moved into town from out of state. He and his group of friends were a year or two older than me. Dave was a bright beacon of hope and joy to me. I was an unsure young man in a strange place. Dave introduced me to many people and ensured his friends always saved me a seat in the lunchroom. I have fond memories of him and his friends during that time. I doubt so many people would have been as wonderful toward me without Dave's incredible kindness. I've never forgotten his kindness. I hope to be able to pay it forward someday.
