Incident: Army Spc. Jonathan D. Menke died Aug. 4 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when debris from an improvised explosive device that was detonated on an overpass fell onto his vehicle. Also killed was Sgt. Gary M. Henry.

BY Anonymous on Aug 31, 2008 | | | | I am wearing a pair of shoes. They are ugly shoes. Uncomfortable shoes. Each day I wear them, and each day I wish I had another pair. Some days my shoes hurt so bad that I do not think I can take another step. Yet, I continue to wear them. I get funny looks wearing these shoes. They are looks of sympathy. I can tell in other's eyes that they are glad they are my shoes and not theirs. They never talk about my shoes. To learn how awful my shoes are might make them uncomfortable. To truly understand these shoes you must walk in them. But, once you put them on, you can never take them off. I now realize I am not the only one who wears these shoes. There are many pairs in this world. Some people are like me and ache daily as they try to walk in them. Some people have learned how to walk in them so they don't hurt quite as much. Some have worn the shoes so long that days will go by before they think about how much they hurt. No parent deserves to wear these shoes. Yet, because of these shoes I am a stronger person. These shoes have given me the strength to face anything. They have made me who I am. BY ludwick on Aug 31, 2008 | | | | There beside a grave she stands, a folded flag clutched in her hands. A silent teardrop on her face, her brave young child has entered grace. She does not hear the sermon said, just memories run through her head. The child she held so long ago, the child with faith she let go. The child who heard the nation's call, and in the end gave it all. Without fear or thoughts of self, thoughts of freedom and little else. The bugle sounds TAPS in the wind, a mournful song it does send. A reminder to us all, that for freedom this price was paid, and her sweet young to rest was laid.

I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted the thoughts of eternal loneliness...should I fail. I have seen the face of terror; felt the stinging cold of fear; and enjoyed the sweet taste of a moments love. I have cried, pained, and hoped... but most of all, I have lived times others would say were best forgotten. At least someday I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was... A Soldier.

BY Anonymous on Aug 30, 2008 | | | | i was at 911 in manhattan, and in the army national guard for 17 years, i got out in 2003, no pension, just tired and sick from r-lung.due to wtc ..seen the pic of your loved one and the positive smile that he carried while in combat , theres the positive ones and the not so positive ones, your son from this pic brought light to others in his company, it show on his faceGod blessed him
