AUBURN, Calif. — David Waters was a troubled teen in this former Gold Rush town before he found some direction in life by enlisting in the military early last year.
The 19-year-old soldier was killed Thursday in Baghdad when an explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle, the Department of Defense said Saturday. Waters was assigned to the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, N.Y.

David was once an older peer of mine and I still can't understand how I am now older than one of of my closest friends.Myself, 23 now I can't imagine the amount of good times we had left. I blame no one but those who voted republican before and during the years of the Bush administration. (you know who you are). My family and I cried for for him, though his demise was no fault of his own. I'll sooner forgive the people who set off the roadside bomb than I forgive those who are responsible for the overseas ''shipment to battle'' of my dear friend David. I was with David the night before his trip back to Iraq. We shared a bottle off whiskey and a long talk. He told me he never wanted to be part of this situation in the first place, and how he just wanted the funds to get into college and make something of himself for his mothers sake. Well... Good luck anyhow David. You did not fail the system, the system failed you.
