SPC Jonathan R. Kephart (9 APR 04 Baghdad)I didn't know you well, but when I came back from my mission and heard you were killed that day, all I could think of was the spades card game we played together in Kuwait only 2 weeks prior. I remember how quiet and reserved you were, but damn good at spades. Your Platoon Seargent was in the Humvee behind yours when you all were ambushed with automatic weapons, RGPs, and IEDs. He told us how you warriored up and stayed behind that .50 cal and took out all those pieces of shit. Even when an RPG hit your back shield, you took your hit, fell in the turret, but you got back up, and had enough strength to get off a few more shots until you had to rest. SSG Di Virgilio being the great medic she is, kept you alive for 16 hours until God called you home. SGT Kovac was probably hit the hardest when you passed. She loved you a lot. I've seen her recently and she's gearing up to go to Afghanistan soon. I heard you had a great funeral back in Penn. They had a 21 gun salute with full military honors. Hope they buried you in the front leaning rest, because that's how hardcore you are. Just know that we gave that Mahdi Army hell after they took you away from us. The hit us everyday for a month after you left, but we eventually took them out to the point the remaining insurgents had to join other cells. Well brother. Watch over us up there in heaven, because there is still a lot of battle to be done until this thing is over. Let the other fallen brothers know that we will never foget them either. When it's my time, I'll be there locked and loaded with you. See you man. |
