Fallen Marine joined military to emulate grandfather

CHARLESTON, W.Va. A Marine from West Virginia who was shot to death during combat in Iraq joined the military because he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the grandfather who raised him, his sister says.

Lance Cpl. Adam J. Crumpler, 19, of Campbells Creek, died Saturday after being hit by small-arms fire during Operation Spear in Karabilah, Iraq, the Pentagon said Monday. The dusty town is about 200 miles west of Baghdad and near Qaim, on the Syrian border, where the U.S. military launched Operation Spear on Friday to destroy militant networks that may filter across the porous national line.

Marines reported finding a weapons cache in Karabilah early Monday, including two dozen RPG launchers, heavy machine guns and equipment to make up to 25 bombs.

On the day he was killed, Marines from his battalion rescued four Iraqi men from an insurgent...

  I was fortunate enough to see my boyfriend return from war but I know I lived with the fear of him dying for 15 months. I am deeply sorry and I am very proud of Adam. He is a hero in my eyes and I am sure the world is less of a better place because he is gone. All of you who were fortunate enough to know him are in my prayers and may he rest in peace. It's truly a shame to see such a young boy loose his life to a horrible war...but heroes like him are the ones that give us our freedom!!

ADAM!! THANK YOU!! for making the ultimate sacrifice!!

It's been 20 years since your passing... However, I never forgotten the day you told me I am married, I am going to have a baby, and day your son was born... You touched some many lives in different ways in your brief time on this earth in ways others can't imagine... Some people can be given a life time on this earth and accomplish nothing, and there are some people who are given a short time and accomplish so much... You Mr. Flores-Mejia aka Ricky was that person and soldier who accomplish so much in your shoft tme... As I see the days pass by, and the war seems to be a distant memory, your memory is still alive in my life, and still on this and like other days with my grandchildren I sit back like we did many times and listen to those West Coast oldies... James David Parker

I knew James David Parker as "Dave" when he lived in Solon Ohio. We met when I moved into town from out of state. He and his group of friends were a year or two older than me. Dave was a bright beacon of hope and joy to me. I was an unsure young man in a strange place. Dave introduced me to many people and ensured his friends always saved me a seat in the lunchroom. I have fond memories of him and his friends during that time. I doubt so many people would have been as wonderful toward me without Dave's incredible kindness. I've never forgotten his kindness. I hope to be able to pay it forward someday.
