MARION, Ind. — A soldier from Grant County has been killed in Iraq, a family member said.
Army Pfc. David Austin Kirkpatrick, of Matthews, was killed April 27, said his sister, Carrie Kirkpatrick. Matthews is about 55 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
Military officials told her parents that Kirkpatrick was in a Humvee when it was damaged by an improvised explosive device, she said. She did not know the exact location.
Her 20-year-old brother was a 2006 Eastbrook High School graduate.
Carrie Kirkpatrick said there was no definite date for her brother’s remains to be returned home.
“They told us that seven to 10 days from now he would be back,”...

My sweet, wonderful David. It has almost been a year since you left us. We all miss you so much. Not an hour goes by that we don't think of you. I miss your grin and the way you made us laugh. Carrie has your Toyota truck. We had to put a lot more money into it, to make it safe. Your fellow soldiers would like to hear that story. They talked about how you put $3,000 into a motor for a truck that was worth maybe $1000. It's still worth about $1000 and we put about 3,000 more into it. We love that truck. We still have your monster truck too. Can't part with it. We know how much you loved it. Nettie drives it down to the cemetery and pushes on the gas and makes it sound loud. She knows that you would like that. Jennie is looking for a new job down Indy way. Hopefully near Carrie or Nettie. Nettie and Jason bought a 4 bedroom house. Emily is boy crazy. She misses you so much. She's told me some things I didn't know you and her used to do when we weren't home. I'll talk with you later about that.We are all so proud of you. I feel so bad for Eddies family. I know they miss him terrible. You tell Eddie thanks for being such a special friend. I know you are both in heaven together. We have a real special stone to mark your gravesite. Of course, you have a view of the covered bridge and river. Dad got carried away and bought 12 plots. We are going to be right beside you. I know you're not really there, but we enjoy visiting. We make sure it looks real nice. We have all of your medals on the front and the back has the barn, your dogs, (Katie and Bailey), your dirt bike, monster truck and you on your John Deere tractor and wagon.
We miss you so much and are very proud of you. I wish you could have seen the respect that the community showed. They were truly grateful to you for your sacrifice. We Love You,Mom, Dad, Carrie, Jennie, Nettie and Emily
